Damn! Busy!
I’ve been meaning to make a brief post for about 3 weeks now, and so far life hasn’t cooperated. Either I’m too tired to have any interest in posting, or I don’t think I have a large enough block of time. I took a 2 hour nap today between 5 & 7, and now it’s midnight, so I’m going to attempt to keep it brief in the interest of finishing before I get tired again. In vaguely chronological order:
Over the pre-July 4th weekend, Dori and I went down to Sanibel Island on the gulf coast of Florida. It was a really charming place, perfect for doing nothing. Collecting sea shells is a popular activity on Sanibel, and their beaches have the finest, whitest sand I’ve ever seen. It’s more like powder than anything else (except near the water of course, where millions of small shells are washing up, ready to be turned into more sand). We were only there for 3 days, but we definitely wished we stayed longer.
We’re also near the tail end of a wedding frenzy - the last two weekends were huge celebrations. First was Melissa and Seth’s wedding, on Long Island. Next was Neil & Rachel’s wedding up in Westchester. Both were lots of fun, and I got to catch up with friends (granted, all my friends were at N&R’s, and only one old friend at M&S’s, but still). Tomorrow is Dori’s friend Shawna’s wedding, in the Berkeshires. Neither of us have ever met the groom!
Sunday is also the unveiling for Victor’s headstone, a somber occassion to say the least. Afterwards we’re going to Mazor’s (the name of that place never ceases to amuse me) for lunch, and then back to Victor’s old house to see if there’s anything we’d like to take. Being an in-law, I don’t have much pull in these matters, but if I did, I know what I would like - the bathroom reader! Weird, I know, and perhaps slightly gross as well, this book “Laugh on the Jon” dates probably to the 50s, and is full of all sorts of lovely off-color humor. The rarity of the piece, and its content, say a lot about the man who had it in his bathroom his whole life.
Oh, and moving appears to be going well. Here’s a tip - if you’re well organized about a move (as we are, so far), don’t overdo it. If you’re getting boxes delivered, have them come a week before, maybe 10 days tops. A month beforehand means you have to squeeze 6 cubic feet of cardboard into the weirdest spots in order to walk around your tiny 400 sq. foot Manhattan apartment!
Super short other stuff:
- Started teaching a friend Go. She appears not detered by my poor teaching style; so far, so good.
- HL2 DM. Ah, so much fun. I’m looking forward to TF and Portal!
- A GeekISP customer volunteered to help me with parts of my grand isp management system. I think I need a ridiculous name for this piece of software that I write at a brisk pace of 3-4 LOC/year, just to put it in the right perspective. For some reason, every time I sit down to do something with it, I scratch the surface of the task I’m interested in, and realize it is vastly more complex than I imagine. This, naturally, slows things down.
- Lately I’ve felt the yen for a HOTAS setup and Falcon 4.0. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve simmed. Maybe I’ll get it and just read the 700 page manual.
