A classic New York weekend
This weekend Dori and I celebrated New York in a few very traditional ways. We’d previously prepared a short list of ‘last rites’ before we departed for Boston, and we knocked off two solid ones in one weekend. Our rough list wasn’t over the top, but certainly ambitious:
- Go see the tapestries at the Cloisters
- Go see a Broadway show (another, technically)
- Visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens
- See the newly renovated Morgan Library
- Go to the beach (Jones or maybe a town beach)
- Go to Tavern on the Green
On Saturday Dori took me to see Corteo, from Cirque du Soleil, as one of my birthday presents. To say the show was good, or even excellent, would really not be doing justice to the incredible feats performed. So many of the pieces / acts / sections of the show were just absolutely breathtaking. These were acrobatics I had never dreamed of.
And today we went to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, despite thunderstorms in the forecast and a downpour of rain as we were leaving. It was a lovely day - so nice to stroll through a quiet garden so immacutely maintained. We were quite surprised at the animals in the garden too, we say about 10 bunnies (some clearly adults, others very small), and all the koi, ducks, and turtles in the ponds.
Both activities I would highly recommend, though obviously the BBG isn’t quite as available for non-residents. That said, you might be surprised at the botanical societies in your area, and how a nice afternoon can be had simply strolling through a garden.
