Shrimp & Alligator Sausage Cheesecake

Bet those are 4 words you never expected to see in that order, perhaps let alone in the same sentence. Tonight Nicole, Rob, Meg, Dori, and I went to Jacques-Imo’s, a New Orleans style restauarant on W. 77th street, right near the American History Museum. Tonight was also Bingo night, where a victory gets you a round of shots. Lord only knows what they served the 2 tables full of kids who kept winning.

So, the SASC immediately jumped out at me on the menu as the strangest thing I’ve ever seen in print meant for consumption, and I wasted no time ordering it.

Let me summarize like this: it’s a very unusual combination, this whole “meat” and “cheesecake” and “cajun spices” thing. Imagine what looks like a normal slice of cheesecake, except its not really creamcheese, its more like cheese-batter with spicy bits of sausage baked in. Then, instead of being topped with a strawberry sauce, its drenched in a spicy cajun shrimp sauce.

Perhaps if I ordered 2 or 3 drinks beforehand, instead of just one (which was great), I’d have been able to finish it. As it stood, I balked about two-thirds of the way through, feeling slightly nauseaus and somewhat overwhelmed by the prospect of getting a plate full of fried chicken next.

Eventually the waitress removed it, and I was extremely relieved. I opted not to take it home with me, since I couldn’t imagine the thing actually improving overnight.

To sum up the rest of the night: everyone liked their food mostly, except for Dori who found hers too spicy. We won a round of bingo, but were ready to go, so we skipped our shots. The fried chicken I got was perhaps the best I’ve ever had. And the bingo guy was pretty saucy.

woot, Cajun food in NYC! You’ll have to give me directions when we arrive :)

Did they have Shrimp and Grits a la: Maxie’s Supper Club? Emily would go nuts.

No ‘Shrimp & Grits’, but check out the menu on the link above. I’m still slightly nauseaus this morning from that cajun sauce on top of the cheesecake. :-/
