Work, Go, Holidays, and the Strike

It’s been a while since my last post, and mostly my days / weekends have been busy with my usual activities: TV with Dori, work, playing Go, and some Half Life 2. It’s been a quiet December, and things are going well overall.

Not a whole lot to say about the job lately, just getting myself more and more acclimated to the environment, and with working from home. I’ve got a new desk and a proper chair now, so hopefully that’ll help smooth things out as well. I’m still enjoying it, and the project I’m working on is coming along nicely. Still picking up a lot of the support / operations stuff, but I imagine that’ll still be a little longer before my grasp there gets really firm.

Finally finished HL2 over the weekend, and it was a lot of fun. I’ve been reading a little bit about CS now, so maybe I’ll give that a try. I did always love TF and Action Quake, so maybe it’ll be a good fit. In my copious spare time, of course.

I also went to the NYC Go Club yesterday, and it was fun! I got there on the late side, at about 8, and met the manager Tommy, a teacher from Japan, and a beginner playing her first games against a person. It was a nice experience, and the new teacher wants to play when I return. My game against Tommy was interesting - I won by about 60 points, but with a 3 stone handicap. I imagine if we played evenly I’d have lost. I suppose I’ll have to call ahead and see if the teacher will be there next I go - I stand to learn a lot from an amateur 5-dan.

So far this season my holiday awareness has been at a new low - thanks in part to economic sanctions imposed on Hanukkah by my family in the form of a Secret Santa arrangement. [Aside: What’s the Jewish equivelant of a Secret Santa? I was going with ‘Hidden Harry’ for a while, but Hanukkah Harry is a load of crap. Maybe ‘Stealthy Macabee’ has more historical fervor, but it doesn’t quite roll off the tongue.] This season, excluding tips to the various service-employed people in my life, I managed to get away with an all-time adult-life low of $150. I really should be more excited.

Oh, and the transit strike. My commute was horrible, it took an hour just to get from my bathroom to my kitchen, and then the cops turned me away when I tried to get into my living room for not having 4 people in the room!
